So 2007 was a pretty good year for music, but now our thoughts must turn to the future: what can we look forward to this year? Music blog Stereogum points out that 2008’s schedule of album releases is light on the “blockbuster appeal” of 2007, which saw Arcade Fire, Modest Mouse, the Shins and LCD Soundsystem put out highly-anticipated albums. However, there’s still a bunch of good stuff on the docket for ’08, and here’s an admittedly arbitrary list of some of the biggies for the first half of the year, and why one might care:

1/15/08
Black Mountain – Into the Future (Jagjaguwar)
The Vancouver combo’s psychedelic, rumbling 2005 self-titled release was widely hailed (with Pitchfork calling it “staggering”). Could they be on the verge of more mainstream appeal?

Magnetic Fields – Distortion (Nonesuch)
After six or seven great albums, Stephin Merritt and co. produced 1999’s 69 Love Songs, a near masterpiece (maybe 85% great songs?) of quirky tunes; the follow-up, 2004’s i, was a disappointing flop. Can they recapture the magic?

1/22/08
Cat Power – Jukebox (Matador)
Chan Marshall returns to the world of covers, for one of her best and most assured albums yet (see my review in this month’s print edition of MoJo). Will her radical takes on standards like “New York, New York” find an audience?

2/12/08
Lil Wayne – Tha Carter III (Universal)
Will this record actually come out on time or get delayed again?

3/11/08
New albums from the B-52s, Panic! at the Disco, Ashlee Simpson, and Presidents of the United States of America. Will anyone care?

4/8/08
The Breeders – Mountain Battles (4AD)
The Pixies side-project that eclipsed the original (and produced two of the best alt-rock-era albums) returns with the original, double-Deal lineup. Can they tap into the same energy as the reunited Pixies? And will their cover art follow in line with that title and feature the Deal sisters in full-on Xena-wear defending a mystical mountain from evil dragons? One can hope…

May
New yet-to-be-titled Death Cab for Cutie album: will they continue their upward chart trajectory or scoot sideways like Modest Mouse?

June
Dr. Dre – Detox (Aftermath/Interscope)
Is this album, delayed for at least four years, real? Will Eminem be a guest star?

Freakember
My Bloody Valentine’s rumored new album, which I hear will be delivered to fans on the backs of mystical unicorns, with a free chalice of magic immortality elixir.

WE'LL BE BLUNT

It is astonishingly hard keeping a newsroom afloat these days, and we need to raise $253,000 in online donations quickly, by October 7.

The short of it: Last year, we had to cut $1 million from our budget so we could have any chance of breaking even by the time our fiscal year ended in June. And despite a huge rally from so many of you leading up to the deadline, we still came up a bit short on the whole. We canā€™t let that happen again. We have no wiggle room to begin with, and now we have a hole to dig out of.

Readers also told us to just give it to you straight when we need to ask for your support, and seeing how matter-of-factly explaining our inner workings, our challenges and finances, can bring more of you in has been a real silver lining. So our online membership lead, Brian, lays it all out for you in his personal, insider account (that literally puts his skin in the game!) of how urgent things are right now.

The upshot: Being able to rally $253,000 in donations over these next few weeks is vitally important simply because it is the number that keeps us right on track, helping make sure we don't end up with a bigger gap than can be filled again, helping us avoid any significant (and knowable) cash-flow crunches for now. We used to be more nonchalant about coming up short this time of year, thinking we can make it by the time June rolls around. Not anymore.

Because the in-depth journalism on underreported beats and unique perspectives on the daily news you turn to Mother Jones for is only possible because readers fund us. Corporations and powerful people with deep pockets will never sustain the type of journalism we exist to do. The only investors who wonā€™t let independent, investigative journalism down are the people who actually care about its futureā€”you.

And we need readers to show up for us big timeā€”again.

Getting just 10 percent of the people who care enough about our work to be reading this blurb to part with a few bucks would be utterly transformative for us, and that's very much what we need to keep charging hard in this financially uncertain, high-stakes year.

If you can right now, please support the journalism you get from Mother Jones with a donation at whatever amount works for you. And please do it now, before you move on to whatever you're about to do next and think maybe you'll get to it later, because every gift matters and we really need to see a strong response if we're going to raise the $253,000 we need in less than three weeks.
